There are many myths and misconceptions regarding jewellery and gemstones. Here is one of them:
Sapphires only come in blue.
Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the corundum family. Sapphires come in a wide variety of colours, including blue, pink, green and even orange. These variations are caused by trace amounts of other elements, such as iron, chromium and titanium that were present when the sapphire was being formed. However, unless we state the colour, “sapphire” is taken to mean blue sapphire. Incidentally, when the sapphire is red, it is called ruby!
