There are many myths and misconceptions regarding jewellery and gemstones. Here is one of them:
Diamonds are indestructible.
While diamonds may be one of the hardest naturally occurring materials on our planet, this does not make them indestructible. A diamond can chip, or even shatter if struck at particular points; this has to do with the precious gemstone’s atomic structure. In fact, this ‘cleavage’ was and is even today sometimes used to break a larger diamond into smaller diamonds before cutting. Our advice is to enjoy your diamonds, but still treat them with care!
