The Met Gala 2018
This week saw The Met Gala celebrate its 70th anniversary. What began as a way to encourage donations to high society in New York has metamorphosed into something much greater. Each year it thrills us with displays of over the top clothes with jewellery to match.
The Costume Institute Gala to give the event its full title, now fund-raises for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The spring exhibition is entitled Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. This theme is what inspires the clothing choices of the biggest names in the world of art, music and fashion on the night.
The exhibition houses many papal artifacts and accessories over three separate locations in New York City. Some of the pieces from the Sistine Chapel sacristy have never been viewed outside The Vatican. This is the cornerstone of what is a very special exhibition. These historical pieces are side by side with designs from John Galliano, Cristóbal Balenciaga and Coco Chanel, who incidentally was educated by nuns.
Although the guests didn’t disappoint with the grandeur of their attire our eyes were set firmly on the jewellery. Some of the guests committed to channeling the religious theme. Many ladies wore ornate head dresses to emulate paintings of saints and deity’s. As you might have expected there were many crosses on display.
A look that popped out was that of Uma Thurman who wore a necklace by Giampiero Bodino .The necklace adorned in five mismatched pendant crosses was full of diamonds, emeralds and sapphires. Her drop earrings also mismatched finished the look with the opulence and the personal touch that Bodino is known for.
Ariana Grande showed that when it comes to earrings you can’t beat the simple elegance of a diamond stud. One of the most understated looks of the night, her accessories consisted of a pair of Butani 8-carat diamond stud earrings. We might not all be able to stretch to 8-carats but every lady deserves a pair of diamond earrings and Rionore has a selection for you to choose from.
Our absolute favourite of the 2018 Met Gala was Lily Aldridge. She is the brand ambassador for Bulgari and the look was flawless. The three ornate neck pieces sitting at different lengths stopped close to her navel. The emerald and diamond masterpieces are a part of The Festa High Jewellery Collection. These magnificent creations of fine Italian craftsmanship stole the show for us and created a stand out statement that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.
