What you need:
500ml hot water (but not hot enough to burn)
1 tablespoon of salt.
Some (preferably recycled) aluminium foil.
- Pour the hot water into the bowl.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of salt.
- Tear off some strips of aluminium foil and add it to the bowl.
- Submerge the jewellery in the solution and leave for 5 minutes. If the silver is heavily tarnished the process may need to be repeated a few times.
How it works:
Silver tarnishes when the surface of the silver combines with sulphur in the air. The black substance created is called silver sulphide. When placed in a saline solution, in the this case the hot salt water, a chemical reaction occurs between the aluminium and silver sulphide, removing the silver sulphide from the silver surface.[
